How to make a QR code free

A QR code is a square of dots that stores a short piece of text, usually a web address. Point a phone camera at it and the phone opens that link or shows the text. You do not need an app store account or a paid plan to make one: paste the URL or text into the box above, choose a size, and download the PNG.
The maker on this page uses the same engine as our QR Code Generator. It accepts up to 2,000 characters, returns a black-on-white PNG at 128, 256 or 512 pixels, and does not add a watermark or expire the code. The text is sent over HTTPS so the server can draw the image; it is not saved as a reusable short link. For a centre logo, use the full tool.
What you can put in a free QR code
Anything that fits in about 2,000 characters works. The most useful cases:
- A website or menu link, for example https://gotoolsonline.com
- A Google review link (see the dedicated Google review guide for how to copy the right URL)
- A WiFi join line in the WIFI: format (see the WiFi QR guide)
- Plain text such as an address, a phone number or a short instruction
- A mailto: or tel: link so a phone opens email or dials a number
Steps that actually work
- Paste the full URL, including https://. A missing scheme still makes a code, but some phones treat it as search text instead of a link.
- Pick 512 px if you will print the code. Use 256 px for screens and slides.
- Press Make QR code, then scan the preview with your own phone before you print a stack of cards.
- Leave the white border around the code. Scanners need that quiet zone.
- If you change the destination later, make a new code. These are static images: the link is written into the dots, so there is nothing on our side to update.
Print and scan tips
A common rule of thumb is that a code can be scanned from about ten times its printed width. A 3 cm code on a table card suits a phone held at arm's length. Avoid glossy laminate that reflects the camera flash, and do not stretch a small PNG into a poster: either use 512 px and keep it modest, or place it in a design app without smoothing.
- High contrast only: this generator makes black on white, which is the most reliable combination.
- Test two phones if guests use a mix of iPhone and Android.
- Write a short label under the code ("Scan for the menu") so people know what it does before they scan.
Free does not mean tracked
Because the link sits inside the image, we cannot count scans and you cannot change where a printed code points. That is the trade-off for no signup and no expiry. If you need click numbers, use a URL shortener you control, then encode that short URL — knowing that anyone who scans can still see the short URL.
Privacy
To draw the PNG, the text you type is sent to our server over HTTPS. The tool does not keep a library of your codes. Like any web request, the text can appear briefly in routine server logs. Do not put passwords for your main network or private document links into a code you will print in public; use a guest WiFi password or a public page instead.

FAQ
- How do I make a QR code for free?
- Paste your URL or text into the box above, choose a size, and press Make QR code. Download the PNG. There is no signup and no watermark.
- Do I need an account?
- No. The page works without signing in.
- Does the QR code expire?
- No. The text is written into the image. It keeps working as long as the link or content itself still works.
- Can I put my logo in the middle?
- Not on this quick maker. Open the full QR Code Generator, which supports an optional centre logo with higher error correction.
- Is a QR code free to create and use?
- Yes. Making and scanning QR codes does not require a paid licence for ordinary personal or business use. You only pay if you choose a paid short-link or analytics service.
- Do you store what I type?
- The text is sent over HTTPS so we can draw the image. We do not keep a reusable short link or a gallery of your codes. Avoid putting sensitive passwords into codes you will print in public.
