Are Free Online Tools Safe? How GoToolsOnline Handles Your Files
What happens to your uploads, what runs only in your browser, and what we log

When you use a free online tool to compress an image, merge PDFs or count words, you are trusting a site you don't control. It's reasonable to ask: are free online tools safe? The honest answer is that it depends on what the site does with your data and how long it keeps it. This page explains exactly how GoToolsOnline handles it, including the parts that are less flattering than "we store nothing."
Tools that run only in your browser
Some tools do all their work in your browser with JavaScript, so your text never reaches our server: the word counter, JSON formatter, Base64 encoder, password generator, regex tester, hash generator, color picker, QR code generator and YouTube thumbnail tool. For private text, such as a password or a draft you don't want to share, these are the safest option. We only record that the tool was opened and used, never what you typed.
Tools that upload your file
PDF, image, video and audio tools need the server. When you use the PDF compressor, PDF merge, image compressor or background remover, your file is sent over HTTPS, written to a temporary file while it is processed, and deleted when the result is sent back. We don't keep a copy, scan it for advertising, sell it, or use it to train AI models.
A few multi-step tools need the file for longer. The PDF editor and the video logo remover keep your working file in a temporary folder for up to about an hour, so you can finish editing or download the result, and an automatic cleanup then deletes it. A small number of tools, such as machine translation, pass text to an outside service to get the result; those tools say so on the page.
What we log
There is no account, so we never ask for your name or email. Like most sites, we do keep basic analytics so we know which tools are used and what is broken: the page or tool, the time, a shortened one-way hash of your IP address (we don't store the IP itself), approximate country and city, browser, device type and the page you came from. These analytics rows are deleted after 90 days. If you accept cookies, Google Analytics and advertising cookies also run; if you reject them, they stay off. Our privacy policy has the full details.
How to choose safer free tools
Whatever site you use:
- Read the privacy policy and look for a plain answer to how long uploaded files are kept.
- Prefer browser-only tools for private text, such as passwords, keys or personal notes.
- Check for HTTPS so the upload is encrypted on the way.
- Prefer no signup; a site that doesn't need your email can't leak it.
- Think twice about highly sensitive documents, like ID scans or contracts, on any site you don't know.
FAQ
- Are free online tools safe to use?
- Many are, if the provider says clearly what happens to your files and how long anything is kept. Prefer tools that run in your browser for private text, read the privacy policy, and avoid uploading highly sensitive documents to any site you don't trust.
- Does GoToolsOnline store my files?
- We don't keep copies. Uploaded PDFs, images and videos are written to temporary files only while the tool works on them and are deleted when the request finishes. A few multi-step tools, such as the PDF editor and the video logo remover, keep the working file for up to about an hour so you can finish, and then a cleanup job deletes it.
- Which GoToolsOnline tools never upload my data?
- The word counter, JSON formatter, Base64 encoder, color picker, password generator, regex tester, hash generator, QR code generator and YouTube thumbnail tool run in your browser, so what you type or paste is not sent to our server.
- Do you track who uses the tools?
- There is no account, so we never know your name or email. We do keep basic analytics: which page or tool was used, the time, a shortened one-way hash of your IP address (not the IP itself), approximate country and city, browser and device type, and the referring page. Analytics rows are deleted after 90 days. With your consent, Google Analytics and ad cookies also run, as described in our privacy policy.
- Can I use these tools for work or sensitive documents?
- For confidential files, use a browser-only tool where possible or follow your organization's policy. We don't sell file contents or use them to train AI models, but any upload to any website carries some risk.
